The Red Cave

The Red Cave explores the idea of bringing communities together over a single phrase and looks at how differently it can be interpreted. The video piece is compiled of visual and audio submissions on the theme of the longest place name in Europe; Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and its English translation of St. Mary’s Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel Near to the Rapid Whirlpool of Llantysilio of the Red Cave. Susan & Tessa created the project whilst exploring ideas around communication and how it varies across different communities. The outcome of the project was unplanned and unknown until all submissions were received; it was dictated by the community responses.

The Red Cave was exhibited at Kochi-Muziris Biennale December 2022-April 2023 as part of the Communities of Choice exhibition.
