I love clothing that has a story, even if it’s not a particularly exciting story, just something with a bit of history to it. So I’ve decided to make a little series of Closet Confidential posts. I got the idea from the ever amazing and inspiring Claire but the youtube tag with the same name has been going around for a while. Anyway, here is the story of my granny coat that fulfilled my childhood dreams.

I’ve had this coat since I was about 12 I believe, I’ve barely worn it. I remember buying it, in Cardiff Dorothy Perkins on a shopping trip with my sisters. I remember it was on sale, I feel like it was around £15-20. I bought it because I loved the colour, I was obsessed with bright pink and I felt really fashion forward having a ‘smart’ coat in such a bold colour. I always wore bright colours then, but I think I became too self conscious to wear the coat because it was so bright and was a little bit too big for me and I suppose a bit too ‘grown up’ for my style.

I realise it’s not the norm to hold onto an item of clothing for so long, let alone one that you don’t wear. But there’s just something about this coat that makes me unable to part with it. And actually, I think I’m falling back in love with it.

It stayed in my mum’s spare wardrobe for a long time, I re-discovered it a couple of years ago when I was looking for something to wear for Mean Girls day and since then it’s upgraded to being hung with my other coats (though I must admit, underneath all the others). It’s funny to think how much colour and print and pattern I used to wear, you can see some of my early noughties outfits in my Photograph My Life video.

Are there any pieces of clothing that you’ve held onto over the years? Anything with a story? Please share!
