There were three things that I really wanted to do whilst we were in Canada; horse riding, canoeing and a gondola ride. They were all a bit pricey though so we decided to just choose one of them. We both really wanted to canoe on Moraine Lake but unfortunately the boat hire had stopped for the season so we couldn’t. Lee isn’t into horse riding so we went on the Banff gondola! After we bought the tickets I was wondering if it was actually going to be worth the price. It definitely was.
Lee decided we should go up later in the day, just before sunset. This did mean that the cafe was closed and that we didn’t have loads of time before the last gondola ride back down, but it was definitely the best time to go. We also chose a day that we knew wasn’t going to be cloudy at that time.
It was great because there weren’t that many people around so we could easily just wander and take photos and enjoy the view. I’ve been on top of a few mountains before but the views from the summit of Sulphur mountain are the best I’ve seen by far. We were surrounded by other mountains, all with snowy peaks silhouetted in the sunset light. You can also see all of Banff town below which looks so nice as all the lights come on.
I think the only downside of waiting for sunset was that it was pretty late by the time we got back to Calgary. If you’re staying closer though then it would be perfect.
If you’re interested in other things to do in Alberta then take a look at my post about Johnston Canyon too!
